The tidal mouth of Bharathapuzha in Ponnani, where 'Bharathapuzha' and 'Tirur-PonnaiPuzha' join together to traverse into the Arbian sea, is a seasonal home to hundreds of migratory

birds and this attracts a large number of bird watchers and ornithologists.

If one crosses the ferry of Chamravattom in March-May period one cannot but miss the lovely chain of birds. Nearly 25 varieties of birds have been identified in this area. People have awareness in protecting these beautiful gift of nature. Hence clandestine hunters are prevented by them.

Another tourist attraction is 'Biyyam Kayal'. This placid, green fringed waterway has a watersports facility. Here a boat race is conducted annually, during Onam celebrations.

A permanent pavilion is built for the spectators and nearly two dozen country boats, including some rowed by women, participate in the race. A big scheme is underway to develop a tourist complex here, with hotel, park and pedal boats. The rest house on the bank of the lake, with its amenities, welcomes the tourists for a comfortable and cosy stay.

Edasseri Govindan Nair

Edasseri Govindan Nair (1906-74) , poet and social reformer, was a native of Mallur near Kuttipuram, who settled in Ponnani. He was prominent among progressive writers of Kerala.

T. K. Padmini
(1940 - 1969)

A painter from Kerala, India, who left us early in life leaving behind a remarkable collection of paintings. These paintings are either exhibited in the galleries of Kerala Lalithakala Akademi, Kochi and Thrissur, National Gallery of Modern Art, Madras, Salar Jung Museum, Hyderabad and at her ancestral home in Kadancheri, Ponani, Kerala, apart from private collections in India and abroad..

T.K. Padmini was born on May 12, 1940 in Kadancheri a remote and sleepy village off Ponani, a coastal town of Kerala. She had her education at A.V. High School, Ponani. Had a brief course of training from Mr. K.L. Devassi, the arts teacher of A.V. High School and Mr. K.M. Vasudevan Namboodiri (Artist Namboodiri), the well-known painter, sculptor and illustrator. She joined the College of Fine Arts and Crafts at Chennai (formerly Madras) in 1961 under the guidance of Principal K.C.S. Panikkar, and received Diploma in Painting (first class, first rank) in 1965).

Kuttikrishnan. P.C (Pen Name: Uroob) (1915-79) was from Kadavanadu in Ponnani. His novels and short stories played a great role in the development of Malayalam literature.He was a Novelist, Short Story Writer, Poet, Essayist, Teacher, Journalist, Producer in the All India Radio.

Smt.A.V. Kuttimalu Amma

Smt.A.V. Kuttimalu Amma was a top ranking Congress leader of Kerala and a fearless freedom fighter. Born in Anakkara Vadakkath family of Ponnani taluk,S. Malabar, in 1905, Amma was drawn into the freedom movement in her youth. She and her husband K. Madhava Menon (former KPCC President and Minister in Madras State) actively participated in all movements of the Congress .

Kuttimalu Amma began her public life as an active Khadi and Swadeshi worker in 1930. She led batches of women volunteers and successfully conducted picketing of foreign cloth-shops in Calicut in 1931. During the Civil Disobedience Movement, holding her two month old baby in her arms, she led a procession of women, breaking the ban order in Calicut and was arrested and convicted for two years imprisonment.

When she reached the jail with her baby, authorities did not allow her to take the baby with her. Kuttimalu Amma insisted that she had every right to take her baby with her into the jail, quoting relevant rules. Finally, the authorities had to accede to her demand. In 1936, she was elected to the Madras Assembly. During individual Satyagraha in 1940, Kuttimalu Amma was arrested and imprisoned for a year. During Quit India Movement, she was detained for two years in the Presidency jail for women.

After her release in 1944, she took up the task of organizing Congress in Malabar and became KPCC President for a term. Kuttimalu Amma had also served as a member of AICC and the Congress Working Committee.In 1946, she was again elected as a member of Madras Legislative Assembly. She was Director of the 'Mathrubhumi' Calicut for some time. She expired in 1986.

Umar Khazi

Born in 1765 AD in a very righteous family, Umar Qazi was to become the pride of Kerala, the visionary poet and a just ruler. At the age of 11, he joined the Madrasa at Tanoor. At 13, he joined Ponnani Madrasa for higher studies. After completing his studies in Ponnani Madrasa, he was made the Qazi (judge) of Veliyankode.

Umar Qazi introduced the Non-Taxation Movement decades before Mahatma Gandhi, the father of nation and the unchallenged leader of Indian freedom struggle, started it. In 1805, Umar publicly announced his defiance of the British taxation system.

When the officers approached the brave hero requesting him to pay his taxes, he gave a fiery reply “You are servants of the murderers of Tipu Sultan and destroyers of Samudiri. Almighty is the true owner of the land. I will not pay the tax”.

When the matter was informed to the Nibu Sahib, the higher officer, he sent a police officer to summon Qazi to the station.

In Nibu Sahib's Court:

When Umar reached the station, Nibu sahib asked him, “Are you the Qazi who refuses to pay the tax?”
“Yes”.
“Everyone on this land is bound to pay.I will exile you if you do not pay ”
“I will not pay the tax for God’s land. Do as you wish”
“You are forgetting who I am and the place you are standing”
“No. I am not prepared to pay tax. "
Maadha taqoolu ya batwaal? ( You fool, what did u say?).
With a furious look, he jumped out of his seat and spit on the officer.
The daring son of India walked out untouched . . .

K. Kelappan

K. Kelappan popularly known as 'Kerala Gandhi' was born in an ordinary Nair family in Muchukunnu Village of South Malabar in 1889. During the Moplah Rebellion, he played a very heroic role disregarding his personal safety and tried to bring about peace and communal harmony.

He participated in Vaikom Satyagraha and was imprisoned. He took special interest in Gandhian programmes like uplift of the untouchables, propagation of Khadi and Hindi. For sometime he was editor of the 'Mathrubhumi'. It was he who led the famous Guruvayur Satyagraha.

On his release from prison after Quit India Movement, he became President of KPCC and ceaselessly worked for organising Congress activities in the whole of Kerala.Due to disagreement with the Congress leadership he, along with some colleagues, joined the Kisan Masdoor Praja Party(KMPP) led by Acharya Kripalani. In the general elections of 1952 Kelappan contested on KMPP ticket and was elected from Ponnani LokSabha seat.

After the five-year term in the Lok Sabha, he left active politics and became a Sarvodaya worker and was actively associated with Bhoodan Movement in Kerala. He established the 'Rural Institute' at Thavanoor in Ponnani Taluk and was president of Harijan Seva Sangh and Sarvodaya Sangh in Kerala. He expired in 1970.

E. Moidu Moulavi

Freedom fighter of Malabar. Born at Maranchery in Ponnani. After the Arabic college studies he joined the National Movement from 1919 onwards. He was arrested and underwent rigorous imprisonment in the Khilafat Movement of 1921.He had to undergo Imprisonment for another 9 months in 1930 for his participation in the Payyannur Salt Sathyagraha struggle. Yet again he was given jail terms for a period of 3 years for taking part in the Quit India Movement.

Moidu Moulavi served as K.P.C.C working Committee Member , AICC member etc. He also worked in the ‘AL-AMEEN’ National Muslim paper edited and published by Abdul Rahman. He was specially honoured in the Indian Freedom Fighters’ conference organised in 1985 January in Allahabad and he was the man who hoisted the flag in the opening ceremony. He was a highly knowledgeable person and he had deep knowledge in six languages. He was also the author of several books including an Autobiography.

E.k Imbichi Bava

Imbichi Bava is the most profound political personality that modern Ponnani contributed to the nation. He was One of the foremost leader of Communist Party of India (Marxist) from Malabar. Born on 20th July,1917 at Ezhukudickal in Ponnani. Even as a student he began to work for public causes. Slowly attracted towards leftist thoughts, he started his political career at first with Congress Socialist Party and subsequently with the Communist party. He plunged into the nationalist movement in the country and played a remarkable role in establishing the 'Labour Movements' and communist party in the state.

He participated in the Calcutta Congress held in 1946 as One of the foremost leader of Communist Party of India (Marxist) from Malabar. He was a member of the National Council of Communist Party of India before its split. He has undergone prison terms and gone underground many times in connection with party work.

He became a Rajya Sabha Member in 1952. He was also a Lok Sabha member in 1962 from Ponnani. He was a Minister for Transport in the EMS Ministry of 1967 .Imbichi bava also caught attention as the member of parliament (MP) at the national level, when he dared to break the norms and deliver speech in his mother tounge 'Malayalam' at the parliament session.He was the MLA from Ponnani when he died on 11th April 1995 at the age of 78.

Adv. Kolady Govindan Kutty

Adv. Kolady Govindan Kutty was one of the prominent politician of Indian Communist Party (CPI). Though born into a wealthy family with the proverbial silver spoon in the mouth, Advocate Govindankutty was drawn to communist ideology and soon plunged into the communist movement to serve the poor and the working class.

He shot into prominence in State politics when he was elected to state’s first legislative assembly in 1957 from the Andathode constituency at the age of 26. He was the youngest member of that Assembly. His later years were spent as an educator of party cadres. Mr. Govindankutty had served as the State president of the AIYF, the CPI's youth wing, the Editor of the defunct party newspaper, Janayugam, and was the president of the Veliyamkode panchayat for 15 years.

Koladi was a notable writer and a well known socio-political personality. He had played a very important roles as Presidents of Kerala Kalamandalam and ‘Edassery Smaraka Trust’ and as member of Kerala Sahithya Academy. Adv. Govindankutty also made his mark as an author. The better known among his works being his book on Valmiki Ramayana, ` Ormayil Jeevikkunnavar', and `Onnu chirikku orikkal koodi'. He died on 13th August 2003.
